Youth Mobile for CarltonFollowing a very successful trial visit to the Church Fete, a new Mobile Youth Facility is to visit Carlton on alternate Wednesdays. The first visit will be on Wednesday 17th September. The new youth club will be open to all young parishioners between 11 and 19 years of age, from 7pm to 9pm. It will cost only £0.50 / session to attend. The Mobile is very well equipped, and is intended to function not only as a club and meeting place, but aninformation point and portal to a wide range of activities. The project has been set up for a trial period of one year so the message is to use it or lose it! Church Fete 2008Thanks to everyone who helped make the annual Church Fete such a successful event in terms of both fundraising and a social occasion. The event went ahead in spite of waterlogged ground and continuous heavy rain, and was very well supported. The takings have now been dried out, and at the latest count amounted to £1,650. Junction improvementsThe T - junction between Carlton Lane and the Wellesborough Road is to be altered when the new marina is built in the fields between Carlton Lane and the canal. A waiting bay for buses will also be provided at the Marina entrance off Carlton Lane. For the time being, buses are waiting at this junction, which can create conflict between vehicles turning in and out of Carlton Lane. As a temporary measure, the white lining in this area is to be altered to create a bus waiting bay and separate lanes for turning vehicles. There will also be new 'Give Way' markings to clarify priorities. Street sweepingThere have been problems with street sweeping this year. The road sweeper lorry swept all streets in the village between 5th and 9th September. Village streets are swept four times a year, so the next cleaning is expected around the beginning of December. Weeds in the gutters have been sprayed, but it is thought that the weedkiller was washed off by heavy rain before it could take effect. Footpath DiversionIt has been found that the public footpath which passes Harcourt Mill does not follow the exact line on the definitive map, and has not done so for many years. It takes an eagle eye and a large-scale map to spot the discrepancies, and I must confess I have never noticed them. A formal Diversion Order is required to bring the definitive map into line with the current route of the path, and this offers the opportunity of correcting some other minor anomalies, making the route easier to follow, and replacing four stiles with two kissing gates. Discussions are taking place between the six landowners involved and the Highway Authority, and it is expected that application for a formal Footpath Diversion Order will be made later in the year. Carlton Parish Council has been kept fully informed of these proposals, and has no objections to them. Anyone with an interest in this matter is invited to contact me asap so that their views can be considered before the proposed order is formalised. Parish Clerk Gardener's DayThe Gardener's Day on Sunday June 8th turned out fine and sunny, making the event especially enjoyable. There were 172 visitors to the gardens, and the event raised a total of £690 for the Carlton Parish Amenities Fund. We thank everyone who opened their garden and helped. Irene and Chris Peat |
